How to Read a Birth Chart: A Beginner’s Order
The first time you look at a chart you see a complicated circle. But reading has an order, and once you follow it the chart starts to speak.

The sentence I hear most often in training is this: "I look at my chart but I don't know where to start." That is entirely normal. A birth chart is not a picture but a text — and like any text, it has a reading order.
1. The ground first: elements and modes
Before looking at each planet's sign one by one, look at the overall distribution. Is fire dominant, or earth? Is everything gathered in cardinal signs, or mutable ones?
This gives you the basic operating system. You need the ground before the detail.
2. Then the trio: Sun, Moon, Ascendant
- Sun — what you are here to develop
- Moon — what you need in order to feel safe
- Ascendant — your door to the world, how you make first contact
Popular astrology talks only about the Sun. Yet the place most people feel unknown to themselves is the Moon.
3. Houses: the subject headings
Signs answer how; houses answer where. The same Mars becomes a sharp tongue in the third house and a tireless work rhythm in the sixth.
Calculating houses requires a birth time. Without it a chart can still be read, but no house interpretation is possible — saying so upfront is simple honesty.
4. Aspects: the tension in the story
The angles between planets are the chart's dramaturgy. Squares and oppositions produce tension; trines and sextiles produce flow.
The common mistake here is treating hard aspects as "bad". What actually moves a person is usually a hard aspect; easy aspects give talent but rarely demand anything.
An easy aspect is talent. A hard aspect is character.
5. Last of all: timing
Transits, solar returns, progressions. These belong at the end, because timing only means something once you know the chart. You cannot say what an event means in someone's life without knowing the person.
Where to go next
This order is a skeleton. Filling it out takes practice — your own chart, then those close to you, then charts of people you have never met.
That is exactly what the certification programme does: we start from the foundation, work through case studies, and review your readings together in supervision.
